On the route of Santiago de Compostela
Four routes passed through the land of Guyenne, obligatory passage for the myriad of paths that led to Ostabat near Saint-Palais (Atlantic Pyrenees)...
In Bordeaux, pilgrims visiting from Médoc and Tours and from the British Iles by river stayed at the Saint-James Hospital, located at the beginning of Rue du Mirail (mirror in Gascon).
Of the former hospital that was built on the site of today's Lycée Michel de Montaigne high school, all that remains is the Saint-James chapel where pilgrims would perform their devotions before heading to Les Landes.
Today, Bordeaux once again welcomes pilgrims from the 21st century in the city's three Saint-James churches that are featured on UNESCO's World Heritage List: the Saint-Seurin basilica, Romanesque and Gothic, the Saint-André cathedral and the Saint-Michel basilica, Rayonnant Gothic.
We know that Romanesque art was spread via the Route of Santiago de Compostela.
