The Grand-Théâtre: a neo-classical jewel

What is the history of the Grand-Théâtre de Bordeaux?

The Opéra de Bordeaux makes its home in an 18th-century masterpiece: the Grand-Théâtre. Inaugurated in 1780, the building is the work of architect Victor Louis. Today, it's considered one of France's most beautiful theaters. Its staircase even inspired that of the Opéra Garnier in Paris. Fun fact: it was used as a parliament building during the French Revolution.
Classed as a historic monument as early as 1899, the Grand-Théâtre has stood the test of time without losing its superb appearance, even escaping destruction during the Second World War. After a major restoration campaign between 1991 and 1996, the building has been restored to its original splendor.

What are the building's architectural features?

Its majestic facade, adorned with 12 Corinthian columns topped by statues of the nine muses and three goddesses, does not go unnoticed on the Place de la Comédie. Inside, the horseshoe-shaped hall, its sculpted balconies, painted dome, magnificent gilding and the foyer ceiling painted by Jean-Baptiste-Claude Robin are a feast for the eyes.
