Decorative arts

In the heart of Bordeaux’s historic district, the Museum of Decorative Arts and Design is housed in a unique architectural complex: an 18th-century mansion and a former 19th-century municipal prison, brought together into a single visitor experience. Both buildings are listed as historic monuments, each with its own distinct character, offering an experience that begins long before you step inside the galleries.

The MADD is one of the few French museums to devote its entire programme to the decorative arts, craft, and design. From gold and silverware and ceramics to reimagined industrial objects, the collection spans the ages without ever losing sight of the thread that runs through it all: the human touch behind each object, and the intention that transforms a material into a work of art. An approach that appeals equally to history buffs and those curious about contemporary design.

Recently renovated in an exemplary manner—reusing 200 tonnes of materials and reducing energy consumption by 40%—the museum has also added new reception areas, a shop and a restaurant. Fully accessible to visitors with reduced mobility, it is now established as one of the most enriching experiences on Bordeaux’s cultural scene.
