Emblem of what has made Bordeaux a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the museum conveys the atmosphere of a 18th-century Bordeaux aristocratic mansion.

A historic place, the museum also deals with the present time by showing design objects and exhibitions. In 2018, the two buildings are classified as historic monuments by the Ministry of Culture.

Its history dates back to 1925 when several rooms of the Hôtel de Lalande were used to display works of art belonging to the City of Bordeaux.

The Hôtel de Lalande is considered one of the most beautiful townhouses in Bordeaux. It features a superb staircase, rooms with attractive wooden panelling and parquet floors, marble fireplaces, and many vestiges of its original decor. It is an altogether remarkable example of a house belonging to the Bordeaux aristocracy at the end of the Ancien Régime. The beautiful building unquestionably enhances the artworks exhibited there. The successful museography features several reconstitutions (in the spirit of American period rooms) as well as rooms in which display cases and antique furniture exist side by side in tasteful harmony.

Visitors to the city can discover the soul of old Bordeaux at the Decorative Arts Museum.
