- Alexandre Dumas' La Dame aux camélias inspired Giuseppe Verdi to create his romantic drama in 1853. At the time, audiences were baffled by the strengths of this masterpiece today: an intimate drama, the realism of the plot, the impossible freedom of love for women of the Second Empire... Violetta, the famous Lady of the Camellias, is a courtesan condemned by illness and bourgeois society, whose pleasures she nevertheless serves. Her path to redemption is almost impossible: only her love for a son from a good family can save her and give her a little happiness. The magnificent production by the late Pierre Rambert places us in the splendor of Second Empire architecture, set against more contemporary furnishings. After triumphing in La Bohème (2023) and Rigoletto (2024) at the Opéra National de Paris, Slovenia's Slávka Zamečníková is one of the most promising artists of her generation.
