Swimming across Bordeaux
Sunday 15 June, 07:00
The swimming club of Girondins de Bordeaux organizes on Sunday, June 5, 2022 the fourteenth edition of the crossing of Bordeaux in swimming within the framework of the EDF Aqua-Challenge.
Created in 2006 by Jean Boiteux, emblematic Olympic champion and coach of the Girondins de Bordeaux, and Marc Lafosse, national swimmer of the Girondins, French champion, to revive the tradition of the Bordeaux swimming crossing of the 1900's, which gathered at that time the elite of long distance swimming in the framework of a great popular festival at the edge of the river. the event started from Bègles and arrived 7km further in Lormont.
The current Bordeaux swim brings together 500 participants divided into 4 waves of more than 100 swimmers from the slowest to the fastest over a distance of 1700m. The start is given in the direction of the current at ebb tide. Departure from the pontoon of honor on the left bank quai Richelieu-pont de Pierre to the arrival on the right bank at the hold of the Bastide port.
The crossing is part of the festivities of Bordeaux alternately the odd years: Bordeaux Wine Festival and the even years: the Festival of the River. This popular swimming event is a good moment of personal and team challenge. The organizers of the Traversée de Bordeaux à la nage have decided to elaborate an eco-responsible event in order to tend towards "carbon neutrality". It is the first "carbon compensated" French sport event in France. Safety is the most important challenge of the attendants supervising the race from the start to the finish, from the first to the last. Golden rule: 1 lifeguard for 6 swimmers maximum.
