Discover the Symphonic Dances
The Bordeaux Aquitaine National Orchestra takes the next step in its Rachmaninov cycle with the Symphonic Dances. Composed in New York in 1940, this work – with its three expansive movements – can be seen as a musical testament, so numerous are the hallmarks of Rachmaninov’s style: irony, references to folklore, the grand lyrical soaring passages of the strings in unison and, of course, the use of the piano at the heart of the orchestra, lending certain passages the air of a romantic concerto. Nevertheless, the soloist for this concert will be the violin, with Korngold’s Concerto, which the composer himself described as having been written ‘for a Caruso of the violin, rather than for a Paganini’.
Programme
- Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 35
- Sergei Rachmaninoff, Symphonic Dances
