A piano concerto in Bordeaux
Lang Lang is back in Bordeaux following his memorable concert in 2024. The Chinese pianist presents a programme in which the grandeur of Beethoven’s sonata meets the flamboyant colours of Spanish music. A former child prodigy, a rock star perfectly at ease in the spotlight, an exuberant personality, yet also an artist driven by the need to let certain works mature (notably those by Bach, which he waited twenty years to present to the world), Lang Lang is a pianist of exceptional calibre. “When you play the piano, every note must be imbued with life and genuine emotion,” he explained recently. He devotes the first half of his concert to German music – that of Mozart and (above all) Beethoven – featuring the deeply romantic ‘Pathétique’ Sonata and the serene Sonata Op. 110. He then turns his attention to Spain, including, amongst other pieces, excerpts from Albéniz’s Spanish Suite Op. 47, a work from his early years. Lang Lang concludes with Liszt, notably ‘Consolation No. 2’, whose blend of intimacy and grandeur he particularly appreciates: it is one of the pieces recorded for his recent *Piano Book 2*, in which he presented 32 ‘miniature masterpieces’.
