Seulgi Lee’s first solo exhibition
GORU GORU is Seulgi Lee’s first solo exhibition, bringing together, for the first time in a French institution, a vast body of work created by the artist over the last twenty-five years.
The exhibition title, GORU GORU – which means ‘a bit of everything’ in Korean – refers to the notion of a diverse and balanced whole, to an exhibition conceived as a meal where one would eat a bit of everything: flavours, textures, raw, cooked, fermented, sweet, savoury, animal, plant-based, cold, hot. Its sound also evokes the G, the R and the O of the Garonne and its swirling presence at the foot of the FRAC. This exhibition offers an immersion into the heart of the artist’s practice.
Seulgi Lee’s artistic practice is immediately recognisable by her use of colour, gestures and simple forms—sometimes performative—that make objects ‘dance’ or ‘speak’. Seulgi Lee explores the material language of objects, which often bear witness to vernacular practices yet are resolutely contemporary in their interpretation.
Seulgi Lee has been working closely with craftspeople for several years. For example, it was in collaboration with a master nubi quilt artisan from Tongyeong – a port in South Korea where this traditional quilting technique has been practised for hundreds of years – that Seulgi Lee launched her BLANKET PROJECT U in 2014, which involves the creation of nubi quilts that visually interpret Korean proverbs.
For this exhibition, held in the FRAC’s 1,200 m² exhibition space, Elfi Turpin and Seulgi Lee have invited Korean artisans who practise dancheong, a traditional freehand decorative painting technique typically used on sacred wooden structures such as temples and palaces. They will be working on the Frac’s gallery walls to create large-scale murals using their unique expertise.
