A remarkable exhibition awarded the ‘Exhibition of National Interest’ designation
1609, Bordeaux. A commission of inquiry dispatched by the Parliament of Guyenne, on the orders of King Henry IV, travelled to the Basque Country because ‘such a great number of wizards and witches have been found in that region that it is almost entirely infested with them’. Women, in particular, were the victims of these summary trials.
This hunt for the ‘daughters of the devil’ left a deep mark on the history of the South-West. It reflects the numerous witchcraft trials held throughout Western Europe between 1560 and 1630.
The new exhibition at the Musée d’Aquitaine is unique in that it takes its starting point from the region itself, featuring local figures and unique artefacts.
