A unique exhibition in Bordeaux
When Virginia Woolf examined the factors that prevented women from accessing literary production, she proclaimed as early as 1928 the need for a room of one's own and financial independence in order to engage in creative work. In the mid-1990s, while Guillaume Dustan invited readers into his room, recounting his sexuality as a cultural and political practice, a generation of teenagers, the Bedroom Culture generation, connected to the world from their rooms via the Internet, began to educate themselves through images with (online) video games, proto-social networks, video channels, and other platforms for exchange. The bedroom and its connected screen became porous to virtuality, multiplying access to digital worlds.
With the arrival of the media, television, the telephone, the Internet, laptops, and smartphones, the bedroom is no longer just a private place dedicated to sleep and dreams; it has become a space for communication, production, and consumption. Technology has finally dissolved the boundaries between the private and public spheres, between real and virtual life. We surf, read, write, work, chat, shop, email, stream, zoom, get excited, play online games, and exist in cyberspace, all from our beds. We are there and not there at the same time, wherever we are, wherever we go. We are expanding the experience of virtuality. The experience of what does not exist in a material way, but of what is active, of what has an effect on reality, on the physical world, thanks to technical, mental, or psychic support. Are cyberspace and dreams not populated by digital creatures, variable existences, ghosts with whom we can interact, converse, work, love, and govern?
From a room of one's own to Bedroom Culture, via dreams and cyberspace, this group exhibition explores our relationship with virtuality, where a network of subjectivities and desires is woven, and brings together works and artists who navigate fluidly between these different worlds.
