The must-see dance show of 2026
Founded by Arthur Mitchell and Karel Shook after the assassination of the Reverend Dr Martin Luther King, Dance Theatre of Harlem was born in the New York neighborhood emblematic of the civil rights struggle, with the ambition of offering young black dancers excellent training, and a place on the classical ballet stages from which they were excluded. The company quickly made a name for itself with its daring and exacting standards. Its repertoire oscillates between tradition and modernity, as illustrated by this program featuring Balanchine's Donizetti Variations (1960), pieces by Robert Garland, Artistic Director since 2022, and Poland's Robert Bondara, set to compositions ranging from Bach to Radiohead, and Blake Works IV (The Barre Project), a dialogue between William Forsythe and James Blake's alternative R&B.
