Bordeaux is the capital of the Aquitaine region and therefore has a large collection of contemporary art (the FRAC Aquitaine collection), consisting of more than a thousand works, some of which can be viewed at temporary exhibitions in the Bassins à Flot. The FRAC Aquitaine is open to the public every Monday to Saturday.
Contemporary art comes into its own in the CAPC museum located in a superb old warehouse with amazing architecture on the border of the Chartrons district. The new director was appointed in 2014 and aims to make the CAPC an international reference by exploiting the museum's archives, developing a specific programme for the new generation of artists and curators, and building up the collection with new acquisitions. She also hopes to present exhibitions that will include dance and performance elements, and to weave powerful links between art and architecture (the CAPC already houses the Arc-en-Rêve architecture centre which organizes its own exhibitions).
Scattered throughout the city and the neighbouring towns and villages you can also find many different galleries and artist's workshops that lend a new meaning to the concept of contemporary art in and around Bordeaux.
