The Grand Théâtre, "Victor Louis's Palace"
Bordeaux's city centre features a marvellously elegant monument. The Grand Théâtre has delighted visitors and been the pride and joy of Bordeaux for over two centuries.

Along with the operas of Versailles and Turin, the Grand-Théâtre has one of the most beautiful 18th century concert halls in the world!
Garnier, the architect who designed the Paris Opera, visited "Victor Louis's palace" and remarked that it was in the same spirit as his own creation. The only dissenting opinion was Stendhal, who thought it was the ugliest building he had ever seen! But you can never please everyone...

The masterpiece by Victor Louis was built during the reign of Louis XVI. This Parisian architect was involved down to the smallest details, and planned not just a concert hall, but also a café, boutiques, and even gambling dens…

On three separate occasions, the concert hall was the seat of the French parliament. In effect, Bordeaux was briefly the capital of France in 1870, 1914, and 1941.
Restoration over the past few years has restored the theatre's original lustre. The 18th century décor, damaged by oil lamps, once again shines.

This neo-classic monument dedicated to the muses can be visited all year long (depending on the rehearsal and concert schedule).
