Site archéologique de Saint Seurin

Registered monuments and sites

The archaeological site of Saint-Seurin is one of the oldest vestiges of Bordeaux's past.

It is a place where part of an Early Christian cemetery has been discovered, one which occupied the "Place des Martyrs de la Résistance" and stretched all the way to Rue Judaïque ans Rue Castéja. In total, more than 400 graves have been excavated. According to tradition, this burial ground would have been consecrated by Christ, surrounded by his saints. Some of the gallant knights who died at Roncevaux may hav been buried here.
