Couvent de l'Annonciade

L’ANNONCIADE, a superb Renaissance cloister Bordeaux has one of the only well-preserved Renaissance cloisters in the Aquitaine region.

The installation of the Aquitaine Cultural Affairs Directorate in 1995 was a great opportunity to restore the former chapel, the magnificent Renaissance cloister, and the monumental portal of the Annonciade convent.

Founded in 1520 by Joan of France, Louis XI's daughter, this religious establishment belonged to the Order of the Annunciation. It was later used to produce saltpetre.
The inner courtyard features a work by the British artist Julian Opie, Five Suburban Buildings, inspired by stone buildings from the 1960s as well as sarcophagi that were found inside cloisters in the Middle Ages.

The modern building that accompanied the restoration was designed by the Bordeaux architects Brochet-Lajus-Pueyo.
